Your home is a system and a home energy audit ensures it works like one.

home as a system

Uneven temperatures from room-to-room, high energy bills, drafts, moisture, mold, mildew, poor indoor air quality, ice dams, pest infestations, seemingly uncontrollable humidity levels and even premature deterioration of building materials can all be the result of a breakdown in the relationship between the systems in your home – the building envelope (shell), heating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and you, the occupants. If one system has a problem it impacts the other systems' ability to perform properly.

Properly diagnosing and fixing the root cause requires a home-as-a-system approach formulated from building science. This is exactly what you will get with a home energy audit from Woodstar Energy. Replacing windows, doors, furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners and adding insulation can all have very positive effects to your homes' performance. A home energy audit will give you the ability to determine which home improvements will give you the most bang for your buck. Now you can truly prioritize which you should invest in.

How a home energy audit works.

We start with an interview of you. We want to hear about areas within your home that have been problematic and ways you have tried to address these symptoms. This is followed by an evaluation of your energy bills which provides clues to areas that need improvement.

Next, one of our BPI certified professionals conduct a walk-through inspection of both the inside and outside of your home. Our technician will use an infrared camera to get a visual on temperature differences amongst different areas of your home. A blower door test will be performed to depressurize your house and assess air leakage levels through the building envelope. Tests for balance of pressure of forced-air HVAC systems are performed. Additionally we perform other function and safety tests on HVAC and gas combustion equipment like water heaters and stoves. This includes inspecting carbon monoxide levels and combustion appliance back-draft testing.

At completion of our comprehensive whole-home assessment, we provide you with a scientific, objective view of the situation. We help you prioritize repairs in order – from must-do to nice-to-do – therefore you can solve the biggest problems without making smaller problems worse. In our report we will guide you regarding which fixes are suitable for your particular do-it-yourself (DIY) skill level, and which will require our expert help.
